The OpenConfig operator working group is a user-driven effort to modernize and simplify network management and operations. Motivated by shared goals of making their networks programmable, vendor-neutral, and scalable, operators are collaborating to build common APIs required for open network automation that work across multiple platforms. The OpenConfig effort has reached a stage at which vendor-neutral data models are published and maturing, and native implementations are shipping from major networking vendors. In this talk we will highlight the progress toward these ambitious goals, particularly on developing operationally complete data models, building software to operationalize the models, and designing network management protocols. We will also share our experiences in developing and deploying model-based management based on OpenConfig for both configuration and telemetry.
